AIs need to be able to sail competently around a triangular course in medium winds. The course focuses on how to teach beginners in the RYA schemes at ESC.

The course will comprise of 2 days at ESC and some pre or post course work in your own time before being signed-off. As an Assistant Instructor (AI) you can instruct, under supervision, a course run by a DI. The certificate is centre specific, awarded by the training centre and valid for five years. Candidates for the course need to be competent sailors and a prerequisite for the course is having passed one of the RYA Sailing Scheme advanced modules. This course is aimed at parents/grandparents wishing to get involved delivering ESC youth and adult training.

In terms of sailing ability, Assistant instructors need to have personal skills beyond the level to which they can teach. In practical terms this means an ability to sail a crewed dinghy around a triangular course in light to medium winds so demonstrating all the points of sailing, the application of the 5 Essentials, and tacking and gybing proficiently.

The training weekend will cover the procedures for training at Emsworth Sailing Club, the RYA training schemes (Youth and Adult), the training sequence and the RYA method for tacking and gybing. There will be a mixture of sessions on and off the water. To gain the actual certificate after the training weekend, Assistant Instructors will be need to work one session (about 4 hours) supporting a training session with the Martlets.

Please note this is an actual RYA qualification which is different to the pathway ESC uses to train its Youth Dinghy Sailing Instructors, who start initially as Instructor Assistants (IAs).
