Cruisers

To all ESC Cruiser Sailors, their crew and to Big Boat Potterers,

Following an extensive and exhaustive recruitment process I have been appointed your new Cruiser Captain! Lucky me.

This may come as a surprise to many of you and it created much hilarity in the Broad household which knows me as a fair-weather sailor with no particular place to go unless its upwind! Eyeball navigation in the Eastern Mediterranean, Holland or the Solent has been my forte.

I cannot hope to match the dedication and skills brought to this post by Sian (and Greg, her able husband!) so please permit me some slack in the initial stages and navigate, as always, within your own boundaries (don't follow me 'Kyra' draws only 900mm with the keel up!).

CRUISING IN 2024

I'd like to think we could emulate the exploits of James Collins Wells (in the Baltic) and Douglas Penniston (heading north beyond Newcastle) but our Cruiser programme will be more modest, aiming to please as many ESC cruisers as possible. I have discussed diaries with Jennie Vaughan at ESSC to create a wide choice of trips to suit most tastes. Our calendar follows.

Upcoming for Spring 2024 Cruisers

THURSDAY 28 MARCH - CRUISERS FITTING OUT SUPPER. Book here

Ollie will prepare his finest and we will have the opportunity to meet new and old cruising friends and put names to faces.

Volana Casket the winner will be announced. Those who have yet to submit their report of an exciting cruise please send to cruisers@emsworthsc.org.uk

Your Cruising Story entries please for the Volana Casket. Do you have a cruising story which you wish to share with others? We would love to read about your exploits. Please submit via cruisers@emsworthsc.org.uk by the end of February.

New Initiatives;

RTI 2024. The three highest placed Emsworth boats in the 2024 Round the Island Race. Recognise participation in this challenging event. It would be great to know in advance of ESC Members taking part.

The Best Three ESC Cruising Photographs of 2024. The aim is to receive as many great photos of Emsworth Cruisers and make them available to owners and sailors. In fact, your photograph could be of any cruiser.

Perhaps a year end award. Get your cameras out on every trip!

Please click here for dates of rallies and races.

Hoping the weather suits a trip to Cowes and up the Medina to the Folly on Saturday 6 April.

Wishing you mild days in preparation for the season ahead.

Mark Broad.

Cruiser Captain

cruisers@emsworthsc.org.uk

We have an active cruising sailing section at ESC both on and off the water, and are always keen to see new cruisers join us.

We have a variety of opportunities on the water, cruising both locally and further afield, whatever experience you have. We have an interesting programme of cruising in company, rallies, and racing, as well as formal suppers and informal get togethers.

We encourage new and old friends alike and we all have a great time. Non cruiser members are always welcome to join us both on and off the water.

We have two important races per year, both against ESSC. Whilst we need the 'keen' and 'accomplished' racers, as we are, of course, always aiming to win, we welcome anyone to come along and take part.

The Yoke Trophy The Emsworth Yoke is awarded to the winning team and The Howard Cruising Trophy to the first ESC boat to finish.

The Folly Trophy The Folly Trophy is awarded to the winning team and The King Scott Trophy to the first ESC boat to finish.

The Volana Casket is awarded for the best Cruiser story/log, usually from the past year. The winner gives a presentation at the Fitting Out Supper.

We hold several rallies over the sailing season and try to explore new places each year as well as sailing to our long-term favourite spots.

We also hold several socials throughout the year. We have a few cruiser led suppers, but also encourage cruisers to come together at the general club events.

We welcome any cruising sailor, whatever your experience, to join in with any of the events.

If you want to know more please mail Mark Broad at cruisers@emsworthsc.org.uk.
